Introduction

Welcome to the DIY Anime Project, a guide to explaining how you the average person can make your own full production anime. I go by the name Cero, and I have experience with many graphic suites but never any experience in making a production of this caliber and that is the challenge for this project. I look to prove that by following the simple principles of teaching yourself and by being creative, anyone can CHEAPLY create and imitate the detailed qualities of top rated show or movie.

Background for this project

At the start of the Japanimation phenomenon, I hated anime. Watching friends and their DBZ obsessions made me hate it even more. I didn't understand how a show produced in a foreign language and with highly different artwork than American shows or comics, could become such an American obsession.

However, as I got older and the quality of anime increased, I learned to enjoy their detailed storylines, and I didn't mind reading from subtitles. Now anime is freely available (legal or not) through distribution systems such as torrents or Youtube. Everyday at least one show makes the "Most Viewed" page on Youtube in astronomical numbers. Just today Death Note a title not show in the states, has 44 thousand views. My goal for this project is only to achieve a small fraction of this amount.

Production

A single cartoon can be anywhere from 30 mins to a whole hour. This is a very optimistic goal and might be out of reach for anyone trying to do this themselves. The videos on Youtube are 30 mins long split into 10 minute segments. Many cartoons of the 1960s (Spaceghost, Birdman) were literally animation shorts that told a brief story in roughly 7 minutes, well under the Youtube limit of 10.

Goals

  • Publish completed piece on Youtube and 1000 views in 4 months
  • Attempt to achieve the highest quality possible for an anime
  • Complete this project cheaply
  • Finally, to complete this project BY MYSELF
