Marvel is no Stranger to hit DVDs

I just wrapped up another Marvel made for DVD movie that again hits the spot in quality both visually and content wise. Although I didn't review on this website, the Ultimate Avengers 1 & 2, I think that these movies were very well put together and didn't have a single flaw. Each character acted as though they just jumped right out of a comic book, and the themes were more grown up so that true fans could appreciate them. Shit, even a couple guys died in the movies. How real is that? Iron man continued the Marvel DVD franchise and did a pretty amiable job with its CG. The storyline may not have been completely there but the movie was watchable and whats not to enjoy when you got a fully CG Warhammer. So how would such an ambiguous character like Dr.Strange fair in a lead role in a movie?

Strangely well, actually. On paper, Dr.Strange, is not the perfect character for a CG filled high intensity flick due to the fact that sorcery doesn't draw the crowds as much as guns. Secondly, Strange isn't well known and isn't a strong lead superhero known for heading mutant teams or crime fighting organizations. Lastly, the villains in the Strange universe, any novice artist can create by simple sketching and adding fire.

So why does this title work? Because Strange isn't so Strange, and he's actually a regular guy, accept with a Doctorate, who goes though some pretty rough times. Its the way in which he overcomes his past and present troubles is what makes him so likable. Think a magician is such a sissy, when you set his physical training to music from Batman, it makes him cool and strong. This is where the movie focuses: the journey, and the setup to the battle, but not the battle.

The battle could have been better, but what do you expect when you have magicains fighting it out, "I command thy rabbit in a hat to charge the attacker?" Thats as good as its going to get, but Marvel did the smart thing by creating a good storyline that embraces the importance of the battle and not the battle itself. The battle is not random, as it brings the story fully together, and how can any battle be useless when it uses a crazy amount of CG.

Because the battle was mildly weak, Marvel did a perfect job in setting up a sequel. Viewers would really want to see what Dr.Strange can do once he fully utilizes his powers, and hopefully this can be shown in the future. And if everyone watched this movie, a sequel wouldn't seem so Strange.
